Modern Chandeliers and Contemporary Design

The earliest candle chandeliers were used in medieval churches and abbeys all over Europe.

The first private owned chandeliers were found in palaces, castles and homes of the nobility and the rich.

They generally took the form of a wooden cross or a wheel of brass with a number of metal spikes on which candles could be secured.

In the 15th, 16th and 17th century more complex forms of brass chandeliers with long, curved arms began to become popular decorative features.

Chandeliers are providing beauty and functional lighting over a table or large open area. Typically considered more of a decorative fixture, a chandelier adds an elegant touch which can brighten and warm up the room. When the light is dimmed, a soft, glowing atmosphere similar to candlelight is created.
